Voice transformation 2 –Murmur

“Talking to walls” is the tagline for Murmur, a video and sound installation which translates sound waves into visuals. The audience can talk into the Murmur ‘echo chamber’, and a direct visible interaction with the visuals on the walls becomes apparent. The visitor’s murmurations become visible. Murmur was created by a multidisciplinary group of French artists. It’s an interesting experiment, exploring visualization of sound interactively. What the direct relationship between the spoken words and the resulting visuals are remains a mistery though.(from http://www.everydaylistening.com/articles/2013/6/16/murmur.html)

The visual effect of this work are impressive. It make audiences’ voice visible and looks like data connecting. The engagement of audiences are fuse together, looks like the toy paper phone.I found that most artists prefer to use voice exchange to visual aspect,it will be more easy to control audiences’ action.

Water Light Graffitti

The “Water Light Graffiti” is a surface made of thousands of LED illuminated by the contact of water. You can use a paintbrush, a water atomizer, your fingers or anything damp to sketch a brightness message or just to draw. Water Light Graffiti is a wall for ephemeral messages in the urban space without deterioration. A wall to communicate and share magically in the city. I remember in about 2010,I had watched a exhibition of The Creators Project. There had a interactive artwork which audiences can control the computer to paint in the air by their hand.It was common technology now.But i don’t like it after I interactive with it.Although it is completely new technology to me at that time, but I don’t think it is a nice artwork.Because I thought it is more like a technology show than a artwork. The screen and painting were mess that combine every audiences’ engagement. It was lack of visual aesthetics because most audience are neither trained about art nor know how to draw.

But look at this Water Light Graffiti,I think this is a nice piece.Compare with that work, this one is use audiences’ untrained painting skill to interactive as well. But this one you can see, even the painting is mess, but it is within aesthetics. The big difference between these two works is artist consider how to present painting.Water Light Graffiti is smartly use LED light to display painting, those small light dot are interesting.Besides, using water as media is creative. The aesthetics of this work is display on the process of engagement.
