The “Water Light Graffiti” is a surface made of thousands of LED illuminated by the contact of water. You can use a paintbrush, a water atomizer, your fingers or anything damp to sketch a brightness message or just to draw. Water Light Graffiti is a wall for ephemeral messages in the urban space without deterioration. A wall to communicate and share magically in the city. I remember in about 2010,I had watched a exhibition of The Creators Project. There had a interactive artwork which audiences can control the computer to paint in the air by their hand.It was common technology now.But i don’t like it after I interactive with it.Although it is completely new technology to me at that time, but I don’t think it is a nice artwork.Because I thought it is more like a technology show than a artwork. The screen and painting were mess that combine every audiences’ engagement. It was lack of visual aesthetics because most audience are neither trained about art nor know how to draw.
But look at this Water Light Graffiti,I think this is a nice piece.Compare with that work, this one is use audiences’ untrained painting skill to interactive as well. But this one you can see, even the painting is mess, but it is within aesthetics. The big difference between these two works is artist consider how to present painting.Water Light Graffiti is smartly use LED light to display painting, those small light dot are interesting.Besides, using water as media is creative. The aesthetics of this work is display on the process of engagement.
1.“Voice Tunnel” is a large-scale interactive installation designed to transform the Park Avenue Tunnel during the “Summer Streets” Annual Celebration in New York City. The tunnel which created by Raphael Lozano-Hemmer goes from 33rd to 40th streets and is open for pedestrians for the first time in its almost 200 year history. The piece consists of 300 powerful theatrical spotlights that produce columns of light along the walls and cladding of the tunnel. All fixtures are floormounted right beside the walls, seven feet from each other, shining past the spring line, fading along the internal curved surface of the tunnel, just reaching its crown.(from http://www.lozano-hemmer.com/voice_tunnel.php)
I found this work is quite smart, use people’s voice which unexpected and uncontrollable to transform in visual.Raphael Lozano-Hemmer has created a similar work before, use voice to transform. Both of them are dramatic.
2.’Which is your brass voice?’ is Aether & Hemera interactive installation employing new media and Artificial Intelligence software to create an engaging multi-sensory experience for festival audiences. The installation invites people to discover their brass voice by speaking, singing, shouting or whispering into microphones; the Artificial Intelligence behind the artwork analyses the individual nuances of volume, pitch and the intonation of people’s voices and creates a new music composition in real time. The sequence of notes gathered from the microphones is compared to the vast musical knowledge gathered from hundreds of brass scores to generate the note to be played next.
These brass sounds outputted through surrounding speakers are at the same time synchronised to localized coloured LED lights and light projections within the space to create a fully immersive experience for visitors.(from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBPKnJbPQoQ)
I also found an artwork which use voice as element to transform as well. This one is different,it use audiences’ voice transform to brass voice and light. But I don’t like it because it is mess if interactive with audience who do not have music knowledge.
Thus I think these two artwork would be good example of my research paper.
This is second time research paper tutorial with Jane.I explained my further idea to her.I intend to investigate the changing role of aesthetics and investigate how artist control the uncontrollability of aesthetics of interactive artwork. And I showed her some example which I found, such as ADA,Rafael Lozano’s work.
Jane thought this topic is interesting. But she thought some example I found is not suitable for my research because it is not digital art.Like ADA,she like this example, but it look more fine art not digital art.She suggested me to find some example which is digital interactive art would be helpful for me to further. Then she also recommended couple of books to me.Like “Digital Aesthetic”,”Aesthetics of interaction in digital art” etc.In the end,she suggested me write down the content base on the topic and example.
After test how projective animation work,I began to make animation via After Effect.
Animation of letter:
First I used Photoshop to draw those key frames of animation, some animation is frame by frame.
Then I used AE to make animation.Because I want to make a frame by frame animation effect,so I need to key every frame. Thus, workload is quite heavy.
After finished the animation,Jake used projector project on the performance.
The result is nice, close to our expectation. But at the beginning of this test, animation projected on the background created deformation. This lead to projective animation did not match dancer’s action. We try to fixed it,at first I suggested to make a distorted animation base on the angle between wall and ground. But we found it will be difficult to make animation which also slowed the progress. In the end,we decided to use mapping software adjust the shape of animation.
At the same time, because of we don’t have time to finish this performance if we make all the animation. So we decide to change the storyboard of later parts, make it simple.
Jonathan has recommended Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s work before and I like his work. His interactive work is amazing, display a aesthetic form. His work are use voice or light element to express his concept. They are minimalism.
ADA is an analog interactive installation made by Karina Smigla-Bobinski. It’s helium filled sphere spiked with charcoal pieces, trapped in a white room. I guess it’s quite clear what happens as soon as someone interacts with the sphere.
I like this installation, artist control the aesthetics of interaction very well in this work. The engagement of audiences contribute to take shape of this work.I also appreciate the color of this work, black and white, with a pure and strong visual impact. Those line which make by audiences’ curiosity and unconsciousness, simple and impressive.
